Alexandrite - Gem of Health and Longevity
Alexandrite is one of the most rare and desired gemstones in the world. Alexandrite's beauty lies in its amazing color qualities. It ranges from various shades of green in natural light and will change to various shades of red when placed in artificial light. As one of June's birthstones, Alexandrite has been making tremendous strides in popularity in recent years.
According to a Russian legend, Alexandrite was named after Czar Alexander II after it was discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in 1830's on the Czar's birthday. Since then it was a Russian favorite since it mirrored the Russian imperial colors of green and red. Today, the deposits in the mines of the Ural Mountains are exhausted.
Because Alexandrite is a fairly recent discovery, there has been little time for myth and folklore to build around this remarkable gemstone. However, it already became known as the gem of long life and health for its wearer. Some contribute Alexandrite's magical qualities as arousing pleasure and love. Alexandrite received as a gift is considered a good omen. Others have labeled it as the 55th anniversary stone.
Alexandrite comes from the mineral family of chrysoberyl. It is a fairly hard, transparent mineral, exceeded in hardness only by diamonds, sapphires and rubies. An emerald by day and a ruby by night, top quality Alexandrite is rated based on the intensity of its beautiful green color with a bluish tint in natural light, and the intensity of the reddish violet color in artificial light, and the degree of change between the two colors. The greater the change, the more expensive the stone.
In addition, unlike other gemstones, Alexandrite is categorized as a Type II stone, meaning that inclusions are typical and a fine Alexandrite with good color qualities should not be rated poorly if it contains inclusions. Good quality natural Alexandrite is more expensive than diamonds - upwards of $10,000 per carat - due to its scant availability, durability, and unique color-changing qualities. Therefore, lab-created Alexandrite has become the hottest new trend for jewelry lovers all over the world. |
