These elephants are always cute, kind, and loveable. Recent films depicting elephants have been "Operation Dumbo,"" and the animated film, ""The Jungle Book."" However, the most popular elephant characters have mostly come from children's books and TV series."

Dumbo-HQ.webp Dumbo is the best known elephant character in popular culture, and has been since the 1940's. Dumbo is an animated Disney film that came out in 1941 and is rumored to be Walt Disney's favorite film. Dumbo is based upon a book with the same name. It's the story of Dumbo, a big elephant who is ridiculed for his huge ears. However, we come to learn that Dumbo is actually able to fly using his big ears as wings. Dumbo turned out to be the most financially successful Disney film of the 1940's. It was also re-released theatrically in 1959, 1972, and 1976, and was one of the first Disney animated films on television in the 1980's. Dumbo also inspired the original 1955 attraction, Flying Elephants, at Disneyland, and can also be found at Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland. Of course, we cannot forget the popular series of Disney's Dumbo books.

Babar is a character who first debuted in 1931 in the children's book, "L'Histoire de Babar in France."" The book was an immediate success and English versions were published by 1933. The Babar stories are based around the premise that Babar, a young elephant, leaves the jungle to visit a big city. He then returns to the jungle, bringing home everything civilization has taught him. All of the Babar stories teach simple values, and thus have made the character quite popular with children. In 1989. the first of four Babar films debuted, and an animated tv series ran from 1989 to 1991. This series is available in 30 languages in over 150 countries. Babar has come to be one of the largest distributed animation shows in history. There are also now over 30,000 publications in over 17 different languages, and over 8 million books have sold."

snuffy.webp Snuffleupagus is yet another well known and adored elephant character from the classic children's TV series "Sesame Street."" This lovable shaggy brown elephant-like creature debuted on the show in 1971 as Big Bird's friend. Snuffleupagus was originally the kind, imaginary friend of Big Bird. However in 1985, Snuffleupagus was seen by everybody for the first time."

Horton-Elephant.webp Horton the elephant is another loveable elephant from the famed Dr. Seuss book series. Horton is an elephant who spends his life caring about people and other animals. He always overcomes life's obstacles by being honest, kind, funny and strong. It's because of these qualities that he became such a loved character by the public. Horton also was a character on the TV series "The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss."" Horton is also played by Jim Carrey in the computer animated adaption of the Dr. Seuss book from 1954, entitled ""Horton Hears A Who."""
