There are two forms of bloodstone; the plasma and the heliotrope. Heliotrope is transparent and
displays red within the stone. Plasma is deep green and opaque with little or no red in it. The

stones were described as reflecting the sun, which reminded the ancients of the red setting sun,
mirrored in the ocean. Many people believed that when immersed in water, the stone could

When it is green, the color comes from chlorite particles, dotted with bright, distinctive red spots
of iron oxide that resemble blood, hence its name.

glassy to waxy luster. Legend says bloodstone was formed when drops of Christ's blood fell and
stained some jasper
at the foot of the cross. For this reason, it is said to have special powers.
Medieval Christians used to carve scenes of the crucifixion of martyrs into bloodstone; therefore
they referred to bloodstone as the martyr's stone. There is a very famous bloodstone at the
Louvre museum in Paris- it is carved with the seal of the German Emperor Rudolf II.
