Bloodstone Meaning, Powers and History

Legend says bloodstone was formed when drops of Christ's blood fell and stained some jasper iconjasper at the foot of the cross. For this reason, it is said to have special powers. Medieval Christians used to carve scenes of the crucifixion of martyrs into bloodstone; therefore they referred to bloodstone as the martyr's stone.ï¾ There is a very famous bloodstone at the Louvre museum in Paris- it is carved with the seal of the German Emperor Rudolf II. Bloodstone, along with aquamarine iconaquamarine, is the traditional birthstone for the month of March.ï¾ It comes in many shapes and cuts, with the common forms of cabochon, cushion cut, emerald iconemerald cut, octagonal, oval and round.

There are many fake bloodstones on the market nowadays but there is a foolproof way to tell if the stone is real- if one rubs the stone on porcelain and blood red scars appear, it is genuine. Otherwise, it is not bloodstone, but some other gemstone.

It is said to stop nosebleeds, anemia, blood disorders, and helps the circulation of blood. The stones used to be thought to heal tumors as well. Stones were pulverized and mixed with egg whites and honey before applied to the skin.ï¾ Powdered bloodstone is used as aphrodisiac and as traditional medicines in India.ï¾  It is said to have the power to detoxify and strengthen the immune and lymphatic systems. It is also said to have the power to strengthen kidneys, bone marrow, heart, and liver functions. Inï¾ medieval times, the stone was used to remove poison from venomous snakebites.

Warriors used to carry bloodstone amulets with them to help stop the bleeding from their wounds and to protect them from the evil eye. The stone is also thought to have the power to make vague thoughts clear, increase self-esteem, selflessness, intuition and creativity. It enhances decision making, induces dreams, calms anxiety, drives away negative energy, fights evil, prevents jealousy, boosts spirits, eases a broken heart, and brings good luck. It is also thought to bring about much needed change.
